Unlike so many politicians, Stephen’s always been on the right side of the law.
Murderers, fraudsters, heroin traffickers, corrupt officials – Stephen has confronted them all over his 40-year career.
For 7 years, he was South Australia’s Director of Public Prosecutions, head-hunted to be our own ‘Eliot Ness’, to take on some of the state’s most vicious and desperate criminals.
Born in Australia and with proud Greek roots, Stephen qualified as a lawyer in 1974. Appointed as Queen’s Counsel in 2000, he also worked in the High Court, in Victoria and Western Australia. In Hong Kong, he successfully prosecuted no fewer than 11 murder trials in one year.
In 2012, he was appointed as a High Court Judge in the Solomon Islands, and has also fought corruption, domestic violence and human rights abuses in Fiji and Vanuatu.
Always fiercely independent as DPP, Stephen refused to yield to the strongest political pressure. He was his own man then – he’s his own man now.
Having spent decades enforcing the law – now is his time to try to change it. He’s forming Real Change SA, the ideal vehicle for a campaign to sit with other independents in the Legislative Council.
